Purposeful Dynamics™
This insight led me to develop Purposeful Dynamics™.
At the heart of my work lies a simple hypothesis:
What happens between us shapes what becomes possible together.
Purposeful Dynamics™ is an approach to designing learning experiences and micro-interactions that help people notice what is happening, make sense of it together and open new possibilities for action.
Purposeful means being intentional about the conditions we create, while remaining open to what emerges..
It means bringing intention to the conditions, interactions and small choices that influence what can emerge.
A question can open a conversation or close it.
A silence can create space or reinforce exclusion.
A moment of attention can make visible something that had previously gone unnoticed.
A small shift in the way people listen, speak or respond can change what happens next.
Purposeful Dynamics™ works with these ordinary but consequential moments.
It also creates a shared language that helps people:
- name what they are experiencing;
- recognise what is shared and what is different;
- make the dynamics visible;
- understand what is happening together;
- adjust their next action with greater awareness and coherence.
But language alone does not create change.
Change does not arise simply from what we are told or taught.
It takes shape when we experience another way of being with ourselves, with others and with the world.
Micro-sensing capsules
Micro-sensing capsules create brief interruptions within everyday action.
They help people notice what is happening before familiar reflexes take over.
They mobilise attention, perception and the body, making it easier to sense what is happening within us, between us and around us.
They are not simply moments to pause or calm down.
They create a small space in which another interpretation, another response or another possibility can emerge.
Because before people can choose differently, they often need to notice differently.
Over time, human capacities can become more available in action:
curiosity becomes inquiry,
perspective becomes dialogue,
reflection becomes adjustment,
and intention becomes grounded action.
Learning as adjustment
Most of us have learned how to acquire knowledge, follow a plan and apply what we know.
Few of us have learned how to keep moving when situations become unstable or impossible to predict.
This has led me to see learning not only as acquiring knowledge, but as developing our capacity to adjust.
Adjustment does not mean conforming passively or adapting to a dysfunctional environment.
It means remaining attentive, responsive and able to act without losing sight of what matters.
Learning is the capacity to adjust to what is unfolding without losing agency or direction.
What if learning helped us adjust together in ways that allow life to grow?
This calls for learning spaces that are not entirely planned in advance, but also lived.
Spaces where we do not only transmit content, but work with the dynamics unfolding within people, between them and around them.
Spaces where uncertainty does not automatically stop learning, but becomes something we can explore together.
From micro-shifts to robustness
Interactions do not take place in isolation.
Rules, hierarchies, incentives, time constraints and organisational cultures influence what people are able to notice, say and do.
Purposeful Dynamics™ does not replace structural change.
It helps make visible the dynamics through which structures are reproduced, questioned or transformed.
A micro-shift will not change an entire system by itself.
It can, however, expose a contradiction, open a necessary conversation or make a different action possible.
This is how small shifts in attention and interaction can connect individual awareness, collective practice and systemic change.
It is also where learning meets robustness.
For me, robustness means remaining able to learn, adjust and act as conditions fluctuate.
A robust group is not one without tension.
It is one that can notice tension, learn from it and adjust without losing its capacity to act together.
Learning in the Flow of Life
This is the vision behind Learning in the Flow of Life:
to design learning experiences in which everyday situations become opportunities to notice, learn and act differently.
Spaces where learning is not reduced to the transmission of content.
Where relationships, dynamics and context are treated as part of the learning process.
Where human capacities become lived and available through experience.
Where people can adjust without losing their agency or connection to what matters.
And where what happens within us, between us and around us becomes a source of learning, adaptation and meaningful action.
Learning from what happens. Shaping what becomes possible together.
